Mongolia on the brink

For some time, Mongolia’s expansion and development of the mining sector has hung in the balance. As always, when a countries national property is at question there will be contrasting views, in this case leading to open debate. Political issues aside however, Mongolia is a nation well-endowed in natural resources and is a country that could potentially benefit greatly from enhanced extraction, most notably, of copper, gold, fluorite and coal.

Currently Mongolia is not sufficiently mapped to provide quantitative data on reserves and proximity, but it is widely accepted that deposits are large, widespread and run deep.  Exploration work continues across Mongolia with opportunity for much more, as the largely untapped resource comes to light. Exploration based on mapping continues to be the precedent and Mongolian companies such as Monmap are well involved, and capable in this practice. Given that mining could begin at any moment in the contentious Oyu Tolgoi project, investment in new exploration areas is essential to secure an effective mining future.
